Mephistopheles is a secret boss in Kingdom Hearts II ½. He is fought in Monochrome Mansion after the storyline is completed.

Story[]

Mephistopheles appears in the previously unaccessible basement of the Le Prince mansion. He challenges Sora into battle, and grants him a Fire upgrade (to Firaza) after being defeated.

As a boss[]

Moveset:

  • Skeletal Summon - summons skeletons that attack Sora. They each have 2 HP bars.
  • Bat Summon - summons swarms of bats that attack Sora. Each bat swarm has 1 HP bar, and disperses upon being defeated.
  • Telekinesis - tosses objects from around the room at Sora.
  • Fire Fist - punches Sora with his fists, which are brimming with Fire magic.
  • Cauldron Core - embellishes the couldron in the middle of the room with dark magic, causing it to shoot magic spells at Sora. These differ depending on the cauldron's color:
    • Red: shoots homing fireballs at Sora.
    • Blue: shoots Blizzard magic which can temporaruly freeze Sora (similar to the Ice Titan).
    • Yellow: shoots horizontal beams of Thunder magic that circle around the cauldron's surface.
    • Green: heals Mephistopheles with Cure magic.
    • Purple: uses Magnet magic, dragging Sora towards the cauldron and dealing massive damage if he touches it.
    • Black: shoots exploding globs of dark magic at Sora.
    • White: envelopes Mephisopheles in a Reflect-like energy shield for one minute, making him invincible.

Except for black and green, all colors can be countered by shooting the corresponding magic at the cauldron. White means a physical attack. Overall, this mechanic is very similar to the battles against Ursula and the Phantom in the first Kingdom Hearts.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being from the silent film era, many characters in Monochrome Mansion (except Rover, who is a dog) have voice actors. Mephistopheles is the only character who lacks a voice actor, making him more faithful to his original incarnation.
  • Mephistopheles is one of several incarnations of the Devil in Kingdom Hearts II ½, the others being Satan and, to a lesser extent, Hades (the 'real' Hades of Greek mythology is actually a not necessarily evil god who rules the Underworld, but the Disney version is quite similar to the Christian depiction of the Devil).
  • The colors of Mephistopheles's cauldron are the only bit of color in the Monochrome Mansion world, which is black and white (in tune with its origins).
